Tips For Minimizing Recovery Time After Cataract Surgery

Posted on

If you have gone through cataract surgery, there is a good chance that you want to reduce the amount of time that you need to spend recovering as much as humanly possible. It's not fun to have eye pain or have a hard time seeing. Here are some tips for keeping that recovery time after surgery as short as possible.

1. Avoid Strenuous Lifting for the First Few Weeks

If you have a job that requires you to lift heavy objects, try to make arrangements ahead of time that will allow you to avoid having to actually lift anything. The reason for this is that you are going to tense up when you are lifting objects subconsciously. This tension is going to run throughout your body, including your head and around your eyes. You don't want any tension here because it could slow down your recovery time. By avoiding strenuous lifting, you will be able to keep this tension to a minimum and therefore your recovery time to a minimum as well.

2. Reduce Sneezing or Vomiting

Do whatever you can to avoid sneezing for vomiting for the first few days after surgery. Avoid stirring up a lot of dust in your house or going outside if you have allergies. If you feel a sneeze coming on, try pinching your nose. This can often dispel the need to sneeze. If you do have to sneeze, do not hold it in because this will increase the tension around your eyes. If you are worried about vomiting, stick to foods that won't bother your stomach and take anti-nausea medication. Sneezing and vomiting in general will add to the tension around your eyes.

3. Don't Bend Over for the First Few Hours After Your Surgery

Try to keep your head well over your heart at all times to keep too much blood from building around your eyes, which can put a lot of pressure on your eyes and make your recovery time a lot slower. Talk to your doctor about when you can start bending over again. Prop yourself up with pillows when you are sleeping to keep your head above your heart and to keep the blood flowing downwards.

4. Protect Your Eyes on Windy Days

Wear sunglasses or some other eye protection on windy days to help keep grime and dust from getting in your eyes.
